This week was a short week for me. Monday was a vacation day for my school district and I was out sick from Wednesday to Friday. I only had Tuesday to base this week's reflection.
Although it was only one day, what I found most valuable was realizing I need to keep up grading students' work. I was still catching up from grading the projects from last week. In-class work on tuesday added to that pile that needs to get done.
Another aspect I found valuable and something I would modify if given the chance to start over is breaking up dry material like taxes (Personal Finance) into smaller chunks instead of trying to get through it as fast as I could. After five minutes I noticed that the students were already uninterested. I had to cut my lesson short and found a way to stretch the activity to fill the time I cut from lecturing. Before cutting the lesson short, I made sure to consult with my coop of my plan prior to execution.
If given the chance to start the week over, I would probably wish I did not get sick because I am now behind in grading and I am unaware where my coop has concluded the lesson on friday.

Joy that is real unfortuante that you got sick. I hope you are feeling better. I, like you, are realizing the benefits of keeping up with grading and have had to dedicate a lot more time to doing so. I am finding it easy to get overwhelmed with grading and handing the graded work back to the students. I never realized it really is something that must be planned for, and I never really thought about until this past week.
ReplyDeleteBeing sick is the worst and I feel for you, I was sick this weekend and did not get anything accomplished. When you get back you feel lost, I did like how you adapted your lesson when you realized that the students were uniterested. Good job.
ReplyDeleteBecoming sick and missing school is very hard. You will have to go back tomorrow and figure out where you co-op left off, and now you are not sure what they covered with the students. Material like taxes is very hard to make interesting for the students, but it is great that you realized it and made you activity longer.
ReplyDeleteAdjusting our teaching because we pick up cues from our students is a plus for both teachers and students! Taking the audience as your first priority over the planned lesson is what good teaching is all about! Great!
ReplyDeleteI hope you are feeling better and ready for a new week. I am also overwhelmed with grading papers and tests. I realize the importance of giving students immediate feedback as soon as possible, but sometimes immediate is not possible. However, I have made adjustments to my daily plan in order to grade at least one or two assignments in any spare time.
